How it works

How our online tutoring works, from first call to progress updates

It starts with a free consultation about your child. If you decide to go ahead, we learn more about your child with you, choose a teacher from our team whose experience fits, and use the first sessions to build a written starting plan. Then your child works with that teacher live, one-to-one and online, and you get a summary after every session. Utah Fits All families can pay through the Odyssey Marketplace.

Start with a free consultation

Tell us what you’re seeing and what you hope will change. We’ll explain each step, how families pay with Utah Fits All, and whether our tutoring fits your child.

Book a free consultation

1. Start with a free consultation

Tell us what you are seeing and what you would like help with. You might want reading to feel less frustrating, math to make more sense or schoolwork to need fewer reminders. We explain how our online tutoring works, what happens next and how families pay, so you can decide whether to take the next step.

You don’t need to know which skill or teaching approach your child needs, and you don’t need a diagnosis. One recent example and your questions are a good place to start. The consultation is a conversation about fit. It doesn’t enroll you, assign a teacher or produce a plan; those come later, with your input and work with your child.

2. A fuller conversation about your child

If you choose to go ahead, we have a more detailed conversation with you. We ask about your child’s learning history, strengths, interests and challenges, what has helped, and what you hope will change. We also talk through practical needs, including scheduling and any help your child may need to join sessions online.

Your experience as a parent guides the plan. A child may show a skill at home that is hard to show elsewhere, or understand an assignment but need help getting started. If your child has an IEP (individualized education program) or a 504 plan, now or from a previous school, its goals and accommodations are useful to share here, in your own words.

3. A teacher from our team

We use what we learn to choose a teacher from our team whose experience fits your child’s needs and goals. Our teachers are Special Ed Resource’s own, and every one is certified in special education; they provide the tutoring themselves. Training in a particular reading program or other named method varies by teacher, so we confirm it for the teacher who would work with your child.

Before lessons begin, you talk with the teacher. It’s a chance to discuss goals, ask about their experience and explain the routines and support that matter to your family. If the teacher turns out not to be the right fit, tell us, and we’ll reassess with you and offer another teacher from our team.

4. First sessions and a written starting plan

In the first sessions, the teacher works with your child to see which skills are secure, where learning gets hard and how your child responds to teaching: which explanations help, how practice goes and what support they need to take part. Confidence, interests and independence are part of that picture, not just the academic work.

That work shapes a written starting plan with goals, the recommended number and length of sessions, teaching approaches and resources. We review it with you before you decide on next steps. The plan is individual; we don’t prescribe the same number of sessions for every child. It is an educational plan for tutoring, not a clinical evaluation or a replacement for a school IEP.

5. Live sessions online

Your child works one-to-one with their teacher over live video, from home, anywhere in Utah. All your child needs is a computer with a webcam and an internet connection. Session times are arranged with your family.

There is no set curriculum. The teacher works on the goals in your child’s plan, at your child’s pace, using visual aids, examples and short, clear steps, with breaks when your child needs to move. Online tutoring doesn’t suit every child, so we talk through screens, attention and adult help before tutoring starts. Read more about what we teach.

6. Progress updates and check-ins

You get a summary after each tutoring session, and your child’s teacher can provide a quarterly progress report if you ask for one. Use them to talk with us about what your child can now do on their own, what still needs support and whether the approach should change. The long-term aim is independence: a child with the skills and strategies to do more of the work without us.

Paying with Utah Fits All

Special Education Resource LLC is an approved provider in the Utah Fits All Odyssey Marketplace. We are not Odyssey, the Utah State Board of Education or the State of Utah. Utah Fits All is Utah’s education savings account (ESA) program, which some people call a voucher. Odyssey is the program manager.

Applying is a separate step

Applications for Utah Fits All are made on Odyssey’s site, not ours. Utah Fits All is for eligible Utah K-12 students who receive an award; a scholarship student cannot be enrolled in a public school, another LEA (a school district or charter school) or the Statewide Online Education Program. Our application and renewal guide walks through the steps, and our amounts guide explains how much a student can receive for 2026-27.

The Odyssey Marketplace (the main route)

The Marketplace is the main route. In Odyssey’s words, “Odyssey pays vendors directly—you don’t have to pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement,” and Marketplace purchases are “Pre-approved and do not require Odyssey review.” Odyssey names tutoring among the things families can buy there. Its Eligible Expense Guide lists “Tutoring Services” as an eligible service, and its purchase limits set no cap on tutoring.

Before you place an order, know Odyssey’s rules. Odyssey has a “No Cancelation Policy” covering products and services, and says service orders “will only be cancelled if authorized by the vendor.” All refunds must be requested and approved through Odyssey. Talk with us first, so any order fits your child’s starting plan. We explain our current options in the consultation.

Reimbursement (the second route)

Families can also pay a provider first and ask Odyssey to reimburse an eligible expense. For 2026-27, Odyssey’s updated spending policies ask for “an itemized receipt,” “proof that payment was completed (not just an invoice or order confirmation),” and “documentation identifying the payment method used.” Odyssey also says: “Reimbursements will be honored for items and services comparable to those available in the Odyssey Marketplace, provided the cost does not exceed the Marketplace price by more than 10%.”

Reimbursement is not guaranteed. Odyssey offers an Eligibility Request to check an expense in advance, but says “An Eligibility Request is not a final approval or guarantee of reimbursement.”

Our guide to paying for tutoring with Utah Fits All covers both routes in detail, and what Utah Fits All pays for explains eligible expenses.

Program status: In April 2025, Utah’s Third District Court ruled Utah Fits All unconstitutional, and the State appealed to the Utah Supreme Court. As of October 1, 2026, the Utah Supreme Court has not ruled, and the program is operating for the 2026-27 school year. Read about the court case.

What our tutoring doesn’t include

Our service is academic tutoring for students who learn differently. We don’t provide speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, ABA or other therapies, and we don’t diagnose or evaluate children. Special Ed Resource works with children from age 3.5, but Utah Fits All covers K-12 students only, so preschool tutoring in Utah would be paid privately.

If your child has an IEP and you are weighing Utah Fits All, read the law’s wording first. Utah Code 53F-6-402(4)(b) requires the application to include the acknowledgment that “A qualifying provider may not provide the same level of disability services that are provided in a public school” and that agreeing to establish the account “has the same effect as a parental refusal to consent to services as described in 34 C.F.R. Sec. 300.300.” Our guide to Utah Fits All and your child’s IEP explains more. For your child’s situation, ask your school district or the Utah Parent Center.

Frequently asked questions

Does the free consultation commit us to anything?

No. The consultation is a free conversation about your child and whether our online tutoring fits. It does not enroll you, assign a teacher or start a plan. If you decide to go ahead, those steps come afterward.

Do we need to have Utah Fits All before we talk with you?

No. The consultation is free whether or not your child has a Utah Fits All award. To pay from a Utah Fits All account, your child needs an award; applications are made on Odyssey’s site, not ours.

What if the teacher isn’t the right fit?

Tell us. We will reassess with you and offer another teacher from our team. Every teacher on our team is certified in special education, and we choose based on the experience that fits your child’s needs and goals.

What does my child need for online sessions?

A computer with a webcam and an internet connection. Sessions are live and one-to-one by video. Younger children may need an adult nearby to get started, and we talk through the setup before tutoring begins.

How will we know how tutoring is going?

You get a summary after each tutoring session, and your child’s teacher can provide a quarterly progress report if you ask for one. You can raise questions or ask for changes to the approach at any time.

Can a Utah Fits All Marketplace order be canceled?

Odyssey has a “No Cancelation Policy” covering both products and services, and says service orders “will only be cancelled if authorized by the vendor.” Refunds must be requested and approved through Odyssey. That is why we suggest talking with us first, so any order fits your child’s plan.

Is the starting plan the same as an IEP?

No. The starting plan guides tutoring. It is not an IEP, a 504 plan or a clinical evaluation, and it does not replace services or protections from a public school.
